Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any discounts available?
We offer a charitable discount of 10%, please enter the charity’s details on the booking form. Unfortunately, we cannot offer student discounts.
Is there a non-residential / non-catered option?
WEMSI courses are residential only. This is necessary due to long hours with feedback sometimes taking place during meal breaks and teaching sessions/scenarios occurring after dinner.
Who will I be sharing a room with?
Room shares are arranged on a same gender basis at random. If this isn't appropriate for you please contact us to discuss alternative options. Also, if there is a particular course student you would like to share with, please get in touch.
Can I pay a single room supplement?
If there are extra rooms available, we can arrange for you to pay a single room supplement rather than sharing. Please contact us as early as possible as there may not be availability closer to the course date. Single rooms can only be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
Can I bring my friend or partner?
If the venue has availability, it may be possible to arrange to pay separately for accommodation and catering for a companion and arrange a room share. However, sometimes the venue is fully booked many months in advance. Please contact us as soon as possible to discuss whether this is possible.
Can I stay in my van?
No, due to the pricing structure of the courses, we cannot separate out the residential cost easily, therefore we cannot offer a reduced-price option for sleeping in a van and due to the residential nature of the courses it is necessary to stay on-site.
Can I camp?
No, due to the pricing structure of the courses, we cannot separate out the residential cost easily, therefore we cannot offer a reduced-price option for camping and due to the residential nature of the courses it is necessary to stay on-site.
How is my course catered?
All our courses are fully catered with set meal-times. Tea/coffee making facilities available throughout the day with breaks timetabled into the teaching. Biscuits and/or cakes are usually available at breaks.
Can my dietary requirements be catered for?
Yes, many of the more normal requirements can be catered for if you let us know on the booking form. For complex dietary requirements please contact us with details and we, and the Lodge, will do our best to cater for your needs.
Do I have access to a fridge?
If due to dietary requirements or for medication you require access to a fridge this can be arranged. Please let us know in advance.
Can I bring my pet?
No, for insurance reasons we cannot accommodate pets. By prior arrangement assistance dogs may be possible.
Can I get to Glenmore Lodge (Scotland) by public transport?
There are regular bus and train services to Aviemore from Edinburgh and Inverness. There is either a bus service or taxis to cover the 8 miles between Aviemore and Glenmore Lodge.
Can I get to the lodge at Staylittle (Wales) by public transport?
There is a regular train service to Machynlleth or other nearby towns and it is necessary to take a taxi from there.
If travelling by train, there are two stations nearby. Both Caersws and Machynlleth are approx. 15 minutes away. It's roughly a 4 hour journey from central London changing at Birmingham New Street if travelling from South East. Trains run every hour from Shrewsbury. If travelling by bus, there are bus stations in Llanidloes, Newtown and Machynlleth. The Traws Cymru service travels through Wales along the coast and A470 on routes T4/5/6. Visit www.trawscymru.info or Trainline for details
Do you help with car-sharing?
We will open a chat on our Facebook page to allow direct communication for students to arrange car-sharing.
Will there be Wifi available at the venue?
Yes, both our venues have good Wifi coverage, although it can be better in more central communal areas rather than the rooms.
Is there access to a gym?
No, however both our venues are surrounded by beautiful landscapes and some students choose to go for a run in the mornings.
Is there a shop near to Glenmore Lodge?
Glenmore Lodge has a shop for outdoor gear, and helmet/equipment hire. The other nearest shops are in Aviemore approximately 8 miles away.
Is there a shop near to the Lodge at Staylittle?
The Lodge at Staylittle does not have a shop. The nearest shops are in nearby towns.
I don't have a helmet, can I borrow one?
Please try to borrow one from a friend! Glenmore Lodge is able to hire out helmets for a small fee.
What does this course give my prescribing rights?
No, your prescribing rights will be the same at the end of the course as they are at the beginning. However, your knowledge and ability will have greatly expanded!
What does this course qualify me to do?
Please check with your own governing body or employer whether this course satisfies their medical requirements.
What are the pre-requisites for the WEMT course?
All students must have completed a minimum of First-Responder-level training or FREC3 and have practical experience applying those skills. If in doubt whether you meet the pre-course requirements, please contact us before booking to avoid refund admin costs.
What are the pre-requisites for the WEMT Refresher course?
If you’ve completed one of our WEMT or WP courses within the past three years, our three-day refresher course is designed for you.
What are the pre-requisites for the WP course?
Registered HCP (i.e. registered with one of the following: Health and Care Professions Council, General Pharmaceutical Council, General Medical Council, General Nursing Council - or overseas equivalents).
Independent prescribers or approved to autonomously use a formulary (i.e. registered paramedics using the JRCALC formulary).
Applicants must be confident and competent providing care without direct clinical supervision, including being prepared to supervise other practitioners in the delivery of care.
Applicants could therefore include:
- Registered Doctors (F2 and above)
- Paramedics and advanced paramedics
- Advanced Nurse Practitioners (including Nurse Consultants) - master’s degree level training
- Advanced Clinical Practitioners (sufficiently qualified paramedics, pharmacists, physiotherapists, etc., who have achieved master’s degree level training and have expanded roles in diagnosis and treatment of patients)
- Any other HCP not covered above who has independent prescribing rights and meets the above criteria.
Is it possible to volunteer to act as a patient during a course?
Yes please! We really value our patient volunteers, they are an essential part of our courses. Please get in touch to find out more.
